Anthem BCBS Physical Therapy in Washington DC and Bethesda

District Physical Therapy is in-network with CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield — the local BCBS plan for DC, MD, and Northern VA. Many Anthem BCBS members from other states have out-of-network benefits at DCPT through the BlueCard reciprocity program. We verify your specific benefits in advance so there are no surprises.

Plans we accept

  • Anthem BCBS plans via BlueCard out-of-network reciprocity (varies by plan)
  • Anthem Federal Employee Program (FEP) — often processes like CareFirst FEP

What "out-of-network" usually means here

Most Anthem BCBS plans have out-of-network benefits, which means they'll still cover a portion of PT charges at DCPT. The exact coverage depends on your plan's out-of-network deductible and coinsurance. We file claims directly with Anthem on your behalf — you don't pay the full amount upfront and wait for reimbursement.

BlueCard reciprocity for traveling members

If you have Anthem BCBS from another state but are now in DC or MD, the BlueCard program means your Anthem plan often processes through CareFirst (the local BCBS). In some cases this means you're treated as in-network. We verify the specifics during intake.

What you'll typically pay

If your plan has out-of-network PT benefits, you'll typically pay your out-of-network deductible first, then coinsurance (commonly 30–40% of the contracted rate). We provide a Good Faith Estimate before your first visit so you know your expected cost.

If you don't have out-of-network benefits

Some Anthem HMO plans don't cover any out-of-network care. In that case, our self-pay rate of $150 per session is straightforward and includes all the same one-on-one care our insurance patients receive. Many self-pay patients submit their own claims to Anthem for reimbursement using superbills we provide.

How to verify your benefits

Call your nearest location or book online. We'll verify Anthem benefits (in-network reciprocity status, out-of-network coverage, deductibles, copays, visit limits) within 24 hours of intake and give you a clear cost estimate before scheduling.

Frequently asked questions

Is DCPT in-network with Anthem?

Not directly. We are in-network with CareFirst (the local BCBS plan). Many Anthem plans process through BlueCard reciprocity, which can sometimes mean in-network treatment. We verify each patient's specific plan.

Will my Anthem plan cover any PT here?

Usually yes, but at out-of-network rates unless BlueCard reciprocity applies. We confirm before your first visit.

Do I need a referral with Anthem?

Anthem PPO plans typically don't require referrals for direct-access states like DC, MD, and VA. HMO plans may. We verify.

What's the difference between Anthem and CareFirst?

Both are BCBS-affiliated plans. CareFirst is the local BCBS plan for DC, MD, and Northern VA. Anthem operates in other states. They're separate companies but share the BlueCard reciprocity network.
